In the atelier we have been thinking about the concept of Light. Students learned about different sources of light, candles, light bulbs, the sun, the moon and the stars. We discussed the concept of warm and cool colors. They shared their ideas based on what they thought were the colors of the sun. Sophia said it was yellow, Esme said it was orange and Henri said it was red. We talked about the way the sun can reflect different colors through the day. The colors of the sun can be seen on the clouds. This basic concept of light impregnating nature was how the Impressionist created their paintings. Working outside and looking at the light as it changed in every hour of the day. We worked on scuptures with film to show the light going through them. Students explored the light projector drawing the shadows on paper and creating performances with their own bodies. We looked at the paintings of some of the impressionist like Monet, Seurat and the style of Vincent Van Gogh. Students created their own "Starry Night" paintings with watercolors and worked on a collective mural outside looking at nature with oil pastels.
