Our first field trip of the year was a huge success as we ventured into the town of Lawrenceville. We enjoyed cupcakes at The Gingered Peach, mailed heartfelt letters at the Post Office, and dined at T.J.’s Pizzeria. Upon reflecting on our walk around the community, the children were surprised by what they saw - a variety of restaurants, a podiatrist, and a school. They also noticed what they didn’t see - a police station, a park, and a dentist. This week, we will continue to build our communities, with a focus on why we chose the organizations represented in our community.
On a separate note, please sign up for a conference slot if you have not already done so. Conferences will be on October 4 - 6. Check your email to link to our sign-up genius. If you have any questions, please let us know.
Grade 2 Reading and Writing
Second grades will continue learning about letter writing this week. We will write thank you letters to the staff at the Gingered Peach and the post office. After finishing up our focus on growing as a reader, we will now start to look at how to tackle difficult words in our reading. We will come up with some strategies and practice using those strategies in our reading.
Grade 3 Reading and Writing: Grade 3 readers continue to set personal goals to achieve success in reading. They are beginning to work with a partner to chat about the tricky parts, favorite parts, characters, connections, and questions. Furthermore, they are checking for understanding by retelling their book to their partner. In writing workshop, we studied the art of writing a letter, noticing parts and the practicality of addressing an envelope. This week, we will continue to practice the art of letter writing by writing thank you notes to The Gingered Peach, Lawrenceville Post Office, and T.J.’s Pizzeria.
Grade 2 Math: Grade 2 is in full swing as we continue to explore number sense; combinations of 10 and place value up to 100. Although these concepts are not new to the children, we will build on prior base ten knowledge to explore larger number patterns. Furthermore, we will continue to build healthy math practices by establishing positive mindsets and routines.
Grade 3 Math
We are moving into a new unit in math this week. We will study multiplication situations. We will begin by looking at different formations of numbers to help the children see numbers in rectangular arrays. We will play some games and draw different arrays to help us understand the vocabulary and concepts around multiplication.
2/3 Unit of Study
The building of the communities is nearly complete! Working in groups of three, the children creatively constructed models of their societies using materials such as cardboard, paper, tape, glue, markers, and figurines. Each group effectively collaborated by discussing and prioritizing their list of organizations to include on the model, deliberating as to the importance of each. This week, the children will complete the building process and begin writing about their community.
