Dear Grade 2/3 Families,
Thanks to those of you who were able to make it to Parent Day last week, as well as to our assembly this morning. The children were excited to share what they had learned, and of course they enjoyed sharing their dances too. If you missed today’s assembly, you are welcome to join us this Friday for our Thanksgiving assembly. The whole school will be participating, and your child will be singing a Thanksgiving song. Hope to see you there!

Math Workshop: We have had an exciting time of understanding during our study of expanded form. We have taken numbers apart, added them, subtracted them, ordered them, and put them back together. The children are getting a good idea of what it means to work with larger numbers. This week we will finish up that study and then start to work a bit with money.
Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop: This week we will work on predicting in reading. Children will be assigned a book at their instructional level. The children will meet with a group to discuss the book and work on strategies to better understand the text. We will focus on predicting and asking questions. We will also work with contractions a bit this week. Children will study what the different contractions mean and how to use them properly in writing.

Math Workshop: It was great having parents in class last week to do some fun 3-Act-Math. 3-Act-Math is inquiry-based, getting learners to think about a “way in” to solving real-world interesting problems that come from their own sparked wonders. Learners almost always realize that they actually DO have a strategy to solve higher level math than they might have originally thought! We’ve been working hard on demystifying the false understanding that problems need to be solved by the end of math class, driving home the importance of resilience, a “scrappy” (or gritty) approach to figuring out, and putting order and clarity around however far they persevere! Learners also finished up their Candybox Pitch Posters and completed a self-evaluation of their work using a clear rubric with expectations. Everyone’s is now hanging in the class-- come take a look! This week we will be focusing on the distributive property of multiplication. We will be partitioning arrays and recording our ways all week, as well as cycling through some review of money, place value, and subtraction strategy during Workshop for anyone in need a “refresher”.
In Readers’ Workshop, We started a new Read Aloud book titled: HELP! I’m a Prisoner in the Library by Eth Clifford. Quite honestly, half the class finds it interesting, while the other half is less interested. Edward Tulane’s character is a tough act to follow! Hopefully, it will pick up….. Ask your learner to give a Retelling Across 5 Fingers!
In Writers’ Workshop, we started discussing spelling strategies in preparation for Spelling Lists! Learners received their first dictation on Friday and received Spelling List #2 today of high frequency words. Taking on an inquiry approach to spelling has been fun noticing what we can do with core words, and how it changes the spelling! We’ve been taking a closer look at plural Ss and possessive S’s . Encourage your learner to find a spelling strategy that works for them to learn their words each work in preparation for their dictation on Friday. PLEASE KNOW SPELLING JOURNALS SHOULD LIVE IN YOUR LEARNER’S BACKPACK. It is his/her responsibility to keep track of it as it moves between home and school. Thank you, kindly!

IB Unit Inquiry: We will finish up our migration unit this week. We’ve learned so much, and now it’s time for the children to show what they know. Children will be creating and presenting story scrolls to tell the story of a fictional immigrant. Children will have the opportunity to develop their cooperative learning skills as they plan and create together using a teacher- created, learner-approved rubric.
