Dear Families,
Hope you are enjoying this beautiful fall weekend. It's hard to believe that we will be celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday in a little over a week. Whether you are near or far, I wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday filled with much joy and laughter.
This past week was filled with much learning in Grade 2/3...
In Reading Workshop we continued to monitor for meaning by thinking about what we need to do as readers, what we need to work on, and setting goals for ourselves. Some children decided they need to continue to work one or more of the following:
Sitting in a quiet place
Choosing just right books
Retelling a story over 5 fingers
Rewinding when you are losing understanding
Using the rest of the sentence to unlock an unknown word
Using context clues to uncover the meaning of a word
Completing reading log accurately
I invite you to have a conversation with your child about their reading in the classroom, what their reading goals are, and how they plan to utilize their reading goals at home. If you are in need of book recommendations for home reading, please let me know. I have a variety of books in the classroom that I am happy to share.
In Writing Workshop we continued writing our fictional our stories by creating and using fictional characters, coming up with a problem (conflict), and a solution (resolution). Before we knew it, we were adding details to our writing, such as a setting, to make our good writing even better! When the children felt their stories were complete and ready to publish, they began the editing process: read the story aloud to a locker in the hallway, revise and add any missing words, edit spelling errors, and conference with a teacher. Some of the titles include, David the Dog by Dhruv, The Amazing Adventure of Latte by Sebastian, and Katie's Adventure by Manaal. After the Thanksgiving holiday we would like to celebrate our writing weekly by having an Author's Share each Friday. Stay tuned for details...
In Math Workshop we began to utilize our knowledge of place value to regroup in addition and borrow in subtraction with Mrs. Frederickson. We will continue to practice these skills in the coming week.
Grade 2/3 continued their inquiry of the current unit, "Communites require certain elements in order to thrive." This past week, we read the book One Green Apple by Eve Bunting and created a community word web of the elements that are necessary for a community to thrive..
Just a few reminders for the week:
The Marsh Play Performance by Grades 2 & 3 - 9:00am on Monday, November 16.
All are welcome to attend.
Kindly remind your child that homework (math and word study notebooks) are due every Friday.
If you are in need of book recommendations, please let me know! I am happy to send books home for you and your child to read together.
As always, have a lovely learning week!
Anne and Grade 2/3 Team
