Good Morning!
We hope you are enjoying this crisp, sunny, fall Sunday. The OK Corral enjoyed another wonderful week of school. From celebrating the conclusion of our first Unit of Study on Marketplaces to new writing units utilizing sound, the children continue to work towards achieiving their goals.
Reading:
In reading, students spent time developing their reading skills ranging from utilizing strategies to figure out "tricky words" to considering that stories have multiple perspectives. The students were able to practice their newfound knowledge through shared reading and discussion with their reading partners.
Heard 'round the classroom about reading:
"When I came across a tricky word, I was able to go back and re-read to see if the word I thought it was made sense. Guess What?! I was right! I figured it out." ~ Charlotte V.
"I 'chunked' words I know within the words! I didn't know words did that!" ~ Sophia
"I love how the character is always happy. She is so funny because she always thinks everything is "Happily Ever After." ~ Jasmine
Writing:
The students were introduced to new Writing Units that are inspired by our new Unit of Study, "Sound is a new tool for communication and creative expression." The children are studying various authors and musician's craft to aid in their writing.
Heard 'round the classroom about writing:
"I am researching Elvis. He inspires me." ~ William
"I really like how Mo Willems writes. He changes his writing to show how words should be read. I can do that in my writing too!" ~ Kaitlyn
"Kevin Henkes always uses labels next to the character in the illustration. I am going to do that too." ~ Lily
Math:
In math this week, students continue to develop their knowledge of rounding numbers and addition utilizing their knowledge of number sense. Through discussions, partner work, and interactive activities, students continued to build their understanding of these concepts.
Heard 'round the classroom about math.
"I like how we can stack up the numbers to regroup. Math is so much fun." ~ Jasmine
"I learned a new rhyme this week on so I remember how to round! It goes like this: Find your number, look next door. Five or more, climb the vine. Four or less, go to the floor." ~ Kyle
The Ok Corral students completed their IB Unit of Study, " Societies create marketplaces to distribute and exchange goods and services." The students baked granola bars to raise money for One Simple Wish, a charity that benefits foster children in New Jersey. We are excited to announce that the students raised a grand total of $85.25! Upon concluding the unit, the students reflected through discussion and writing on the gratitude felt towards to the PJS community, the positive impact they are making for the children in foster homes, and the importance of the IB Learner Profiles, risk-taker, caring, and principled. We would like to thank Mrs. Gutierrez for loaning her special granola pan as well as the granola bar recipe.

Heard around the classroom this week:
"I feel so good that we are giving the money from the granola bar sales to the children. They need us!" ~ Myla
"Kojo really inspired me as an IB Learner. He helped people in his marketplace. We helped people in our marketplace of granola bars." ~ Micah
"The book One Hen is about a boy named Kojo. He is, well, he started out with nothing. He made his life better by working hard. He went to a banker, who saw his potential, and gave him a loan so he could start a farm. Then we made an IB profile of Kojo, to see what traits he has. We described him in IB language. For example, caring, a thinker, and well, principled."
We are looking forward to another exciting week of learning! Enjoy this long weekend and we hope to see you all this Friday at the PJS Bonfire!
