Math Workshop: We had a good time last week measuring length. We also went to the kitchen to use cups, pints, quarts, and gallons to do some capacity measurements. This week, we will focus on measuring weight. Children will again work with customary and metric units of measure.
Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop: We’ve had a great time reading and writing poetry. This week we will begin a study on nouns and verbs. We will review definitions of each, and we will find them in our reading. We will pay close attention to them in our writing as well. This will help us start to use more powerful nouns and verbs in our writing as we mature as writers.
In Grade 3
Math Workshop: We explored various 3D shapes! We’ve been building up our language to describe attributes of 3D shapes. Such characteristics include: face, base, edge, prism, pyramid, cone, square, hemisphere, and cube. Several questions came up such as: What makes a prism a prism? What makes a pyramid a pyramid? We looked closely at nets in order to predict what 3D shape they might make before constructing them. Then, we played more games of “Guess My Rule”
In Readers’ Workshop, we continue to be enthralled with poetry! Mrs. Gallagher brought in about 40 poetry books written by a variety of new poets! Ask your learner about a poet they’ve been reading in class! We unpacked a poem called Cotton Candy and then did a “symphony reading”. Ask your learning how you do a “symphony reading” of a poem. It’s really fun and helps to highlight what makes the poem so special!
In Writers’ Workshop: passionate poets are alive with their gathering journals at their sides! After publishing a few poems about ordinary things like: a chair, an owl, traffic, domes, bridges, rattlesnakes, among other things-- which have blossomed into potential class anthology collaborations! Among them are anthologies about: Structures, Pets, Furniture, Animals, and Food.
