Students in the OK Corral had another terrific week. We continued with exploring our IB unit: Societies create marketplaces to distribute and exchange goods and services.
Each student investigated various marketplaces and economies around the globe. Each explored needs and wants of people around the world, from countries with plenty to those struggling to meet the most basic needs of their people. They also engaged in lively conversation as to what needs were essential and those wants that were not. This coming week, they will continue to compare and contrast needs and wants of others on a global, as well as on a local scale.
Heard around the classroom:
"There are a lot of people that are trying to get clean water, like in India. They need clean water." - Oliver
"In Venezuela, the people are really suffering because they don't have food." - Ana Sophia
"Sometimes people don't really think of what people need, only what they want." Lily
We think we really need pillows, but we really don't. There are people around the world that don't sleep on pillows." - Sophia
"People in other places might have different needs and wants than we do here. We are a wealthy country, but some people here can't afford food and live in the streets. It's sad." - Polaris
Question posed to the students to think about over the weekend: "I will think about what I really need and what I really want."
This week in reading, students worked on strengthening their comprehension skills. From posting their thinking with post-it notes to asking important questions while reading, students were able to expand their knowledge by increasing their reading comprehension, fluency, and accuracy. In the coming week, students will continue to work with their reading partners and conference with Miss O. and Mrs. K.
Heard around the classroom:
"We learned how to use post-it notes on what we wonder, what made us happy and what made us laugh!" - Kaitlyn
"I really like the post-its because I get to share what part was funny. It helped me think about the book more." - Kyle
In writing, students continue to increase their stamina by "Writing to the Bones". The eagerly share their writing with the class as they are beginning to discover their own writing voice and style! After WTTB, students proceed on developing their "beginning, middle, and ends," while increasingly developing the characters by adding more detail to their stories.
Heard around the writing tables:
"I really like Writing to the Bones! I really like that we have time to just write what we want." - Manaal
I learned a lot about words in writing. I wrote a three page story but I wanted to start a new one, so I did." - Sophia
"I am writing a story about my brother! I am really thinking about it because it's almost like a fairy tale." - Micah
In mathematics, students continue to expand their of place value knowledge by understanding the different forms of numbers - standard number, expansion form, and written form. They are also developing an understanding of comparing, rounding and estimating numbers.
Heard around math centers:
"We did estimation, rounding, and place value. I can round numbers such as a million - not the biggest number you can possibly give me, but I can do that!" - Praslin
"I liked math this week because we learned about expanded form, standard form, and written form." - Charlotte V.
"I loved when we added the rounded numbers!" - Jasmine
Have a wonderful week and as always, please email us with any questions!
