Good afternoon!
We hope you are having a lovely last day of summer! It was wonderful seeing many of you at least week's picnic, it was a fantastic event and we are so thankful to the PJSPA for having it! We are excited for the next event, the PJS bonfire!
Students in the OK Corral had a fantastic week of learning. We launched our first IB unit: Societies create marketplaces to distribute and exchange goods and services. Students explored images of marketplaces from the world and lead group discussions on where they believed their images came from due to clues that triggered prior knowledge. From floating markets in Thailand, to souk marketplaces in Morocco, and mercados in Mexico, students shared their ideas and worked together to place them in their correct geographic locations.
This week, students will explore types of marketplaces and economies around the glode. Students will also look into needs and wants of people around the world, from countries with plenty to those struggling to meet the most basic needs of their people. Students will inquire into their own needs and how they compare to the needs and wants of others on a global, as well as local, scale.
Heard around the classroom:
"I did not know there were so many types of markets, especially ones that float. I didn't know you could take your food on a little boat to sell it"
"Our markets are different from other places. I wonder if they like the same things than we do?"
"Some of the markets are small and do not have that much. I wonder why?"
"Do other places have money like we do? I don't see cash registers"
This week in reading, students worked on their individual reading goals. From studying authors to working with reading partners, students were able to develop their reading comprehension, fluency, and accuracy. In the coming week, students will continue to work with their reading partners and conference with Mrs. K and Miss O as they develop their reading skills.
Heard around the classroom:
"I can find so many books I want to read. I really like sharing my books with my reading partner. Then we both get to like reading the book!"
"My reading partner and I help each other when we don't know a word or get confused. We help each other understand and get better."
"I really like how some authors can be funny with their writing. I think I am going to try to use comedy in my writing too."
In writing, students are continuing their "Writing to the bones" at the start of each lesson. Students are doing a fantastic job at increasing their writing endurance, we are already up to 7 minutes of nonstop writing! Students are really enjoying sharing their writing stories with classmates at the end of their WTTB time.
After WTTB, students have been diligently working on developing their "beginning, middle, and ends," and writing with sensory details in Writer's Workshop. Students are writing some fantastic stories and we look forward to publishing in the coming weeks!
Heard around the writing tables:
"I can use sensory details to help the reader of my story know what is happening. I need to tell them about how the air feels and what the setting is so they really know."
"When I sit outside I can really practice writing sensory details. There's so much to see, hear, and smell. I think it's going to help me write more detailed stories."
"I wrote a beginning, middle, and end for my story about sharks! I'm going to write even more tomorrow!"
In mathematics, students are continuing to develop their knowledge of place value. We hope you enjoyed some of the place value games from last week's homework assignments. Please feel free to continue playing these games with your child. They are great for developing place value, number sense, and strategy! In the coming week, students will develop their knowledge of ordering, comparing, and estimating numbers.
Heard around math centers:
"Sometimes the best way to learn something new is with a game to make you think about lots of possibilities"
"I like teaching my partner place value, it makes me think about it more. Mostly with the game, its hard to tell them why something is better than another; it helps me think about it more"
"I can't wait to do place value with the thousands!"
Have a lovely week and as always, please email us with any questions!
