We have been working on poetry and Simple Machines since our return from break. I am thrilled to share a union of the two by a student who wishes to remain anonymous!
This week we continued to explore poetry in all its glorious forms in readers and writers workshops. Each day at the end of readers workshop several students shared a poem that they found exceptional and we used our critical eye to examine how the poem demonstrated our lesson for the day. In writers workshop, students were working on writing from observation. They were looking through their poets eyes to use the most descriptive language when writing about everyday objects. This resulted in some beautiful poetry from many students, and all had an opportunity to share!
In Inquiry we had a fun time discovering what work really is through an experiment. We made a list to define what our understanding of work looked like before the experiment began. Students were broken up into groups and had to carry out the experiment with their teammates. After the experiment we discussed how work can be made easier or more difficult depending on how you carry it out. The students were able to connect how simple machines can make work easier after the work they did in the experiment!
We continued to look at different kinds for graphs this week. We discussed data, how to take a survey and how different kinds of graphs can represent the same kind of data. Our students started their last graphing project where they had to come up with a topic to ask each other questions about for a survey. They will then turn that data into a graph of their choice. We can't wait to see the finished graphs! Have a great weekend!
