Dear Families,
We hope you are enjoing this crisp, sunny, fall Sunday! Grade 2/3 enjoyed another wonderful week of learning. From celebrating the conclusion of our first Unit of Study, One Human Can Impact the World to wishing Mrs. Janell well as she goes on maternity leave, the children continue to work towards achieiving their goals.
Reading:
In reading, the children spent time developing their reading skills by continuing to practice re-telling, as well as increase their vocabulary by collecting words and golden lines. Students were able to practice their newfound knowledge through shared reading and discussion with their reading partners.
Heard 'round the classroom about reading:
"Retelling helps me remember the story." ~ Linn
"Golden lines are everywhere." ~ Sebastian
"I like this word, 'shepard'." ~ Vanessa
Writing:
The children were able to capture the essence of our IB Unit, One Human Can Impact the World as they chose one person they know who impacted the world and wrote about him/her.
Heard 'round the classroom about writing:
"My dad impacts the world because he works for a medicine company. His actions are getting medicine ingrediants. He helps people and the world with the medicine he makes." ~ Grace
"Dr. Mary Leck changed the world by taking care of the marsh. She cleaned it up by using a net to scoop out the trash. Mary Leck is caring because she thought about the animals in the marsh." ~ Jack
"My mom changed the world because she makes medicine for people that are sick. She is knowlegeable because she studied a lot more. She is a thinker too because she has to think more about the medicines." ~ Oscar
Math:
In math this week, students continue to develop their number sense by comparing numbers within place value. Through discussions, partner work, and interactive activities, students continued to build their understanding of these concepts.
Heard 'round the classroom about math.
"Did you know that you can figure out if a number is bigger than another just by looking at the place value?" ~ Brodie
"We need to know how to compare numbers to show how many there are of
something." ~ Dhruv
One Human Can Impact the World:
Upon concluding our unit, the children reflected through discussion and writing of their unit of study by carefully considering citizens of the world who have made a difference ~ Wangari, Dr. Mary Leck, Yo Yo Mon, as well as fictional characters; The Curious Gardnerer by Peter Brown and The Flowerman by Mark Ludy. These people helped to guide the children on their journey of understanding that the qualities of responsible citizens and their personal interests and passions are the driving force of how One Human Can Impact the World.
