We are heading out on a field trip this week in support of our unit. To see more about how societies are organized, we will be visiting downtown Lawrenceville. We will make stops at a bakery (The Gingered Peach), the post office, and a restaurant (TJ’s). We will walk from place to place, so we can take notes of what other businesses and services make up a community. These notes will help the children as they work to create their own models of communities in the classroom.
We could use your help with two things. Please let Lynette O’Brien ([email protected]) or Aurora Calonico ([email protected]) know if you are able to drive for our trip. Also, please remember to continue to send in old food boxes for the children to use for their community models.
On a separate note, please sign up for a conference slot if you have not already done so. Conferences will be on October 4 - 6. Check your email to link to our sign-up genius. If you have any questions, please let us know.
Grade 2 Reading and Writing
It’s an exciting time of year as children set goals for themselves in reading and writing. We have been focusing on ways we can grow as readers, and children have been trying to apply what they have learned during our reading times. Writing is also getting exciting as children have been using their writer’s notebooks to gather idea, move those ideas to paper, and even publish some pieces to add to their portfolios.
Grade 3 Reading and Writing: Grade 3 continues to think about, “making reading the BEST it can be” by thinking about who they as readers and setting goals to achieve success. The children are learning how to respond to text by writing their wonderings, questions, and thoughts in their reading response journal. The 3rd-grade writers continue gathering their noticings in their writer’s notebook, moving their noticings to paper, revising and editing, and publishing some fantastic writing.
Grade 2 Math: Grade 2 mathematicians continue to establish healthy math habits by establishing routines and positive mind-set. We have been exploring the concept of joining and separating numbers as well as math vocabulary; sum, adding, difference, subtraction. This week, we will begin working with place value, working with numbers up to 1,000.
Grade 3 Math
We are in full swing in math as we have been working with place value. This is not a new concept, but we have now been working with numbers up to 100,000. This week we will focus on counting by 25s, 50s, and 100s. We will also look at the properties of adding and subtracting even and odd numbers.
2/3 Unit of Study
It’s building time! Last week children decided that the best way to show what they know about how societies are organized is to build a model of a community. Children are working in groups of three to create their communities. They have listed what they think is important, and now most groups are drawing a map to show what their community will look like. These plans will be ever evolving as we learn more about different societies and visit downtown Lawrenceville on Friday.
