Good afternoon!
We hope you are enjoying this beautiful September afternoon! We especially hope to see you today at two p.m. today for our school picnic!
The OK Corral had a busy week of learning! During reading this week, students explored our classroom library to find a book just right for them, discovered new authors and characters, shared their thoughts and predictions, and created their first reading goals of the year.
A bit about reading:
"I like the books in the library" - Sebastian
"I enjoy DEAR (Drop Everything and Read)." - Ana - Sophia
"My favorite part of the week is DEAR, and technology, and Spanish. I like DEAR because we get to read our books!" - Lily
"I like that during DEAR you can choose any book you want." - Oliver
"This week I read Dr. Doolittle. It is about a doctor who talks to animals. There are multiple conflicts. I really liked how humorous the author is, it was pretty funny to read!" - Praslin
In writing, students have been "Writing to the bones" at the start of each lesson. This writing method encourages students to build their writing stamina by increasing the amount of time they spend writing without a break. As the time increases each day, students additionally begin to incorporate more details as they find their writing voice. Students began their handwriting lessons as well, many are enjoying the chance to develop their handwriting and see it reflected in their daily "writing to the bones" journal entries. Students have also begun to set their first writing goals of the year.
A bit of what students had to say about writing this week:
"I liked writing this week because I really enjoy cursive writing. I like how it is so fancy!" - Micah
"I really like that I did cursive this week. It is fancy and creative. When I know cursive I am going to keep practicing and write pretty letters to people." - Jasmine
"Writing to the Bones is pretty fun, I like thinking of what to write about." - Kyle
"I liked making our heart maps for writing" - Sophia
"I like writing to the bones because I can write about what I think of and I am going to write for longer." - Sarea
In mathematics, students have been developing and expanding their knowledge of place value. Place value is a significant concept as it helps students develop an understand of the magnitude of a number and sets a foundation for addition and subtraction. Students developed their knowledge of place value this week by using a variety of math tools and by playing a variety of math games, including 101 and Out and the Place Value Game (commonly referred to as the "Trash Can Game" because of the use of a trash can in game strategy.) These games focus on building student awareness of the value of the ones, tens, and hundreds. Please ask your student about these games, they are great practice for place value as well as fantastic for building critical thinking skills!
A bit of what students had to say about math this week:
"We played the Trash Can Game, it was super fun! We took some dice and rolled them. There is a trash can, and if you roll a 1 or 2 you want to put it in the trash can because you probably will roll a higher number. If you get a 6, put it in the hundreds, if you get a 5 you would want to put it in the tens of hundreds. I think a 4 would go best in the 1s. If you do all that without putting something in the trash can, you still have to roll and you might get something bigger, it is all about planning ahead." - Isaac
"101 and Out is a game where you use a white board, make two columns, and write their team names on each side. You have to roll the dice and then, whichever number it lands on, you must choose if you want to use it as a one or ten. You get six turns. If you go over 100, you are out and the other team wins."
"We've been created some of our own problems in math to help with our skills. It helps me to think about the problem and how I can solve it best." - Polaris
"I liked place value this week because it is fun and I like doing math problems. I really like math"
This coming week, we will be launching our first IB unit: Societies create marketplaces to distribute and exchange goods and services. We are very excited about this unit and will be sending more information home this week!
Have a lovely week and as always, please email us with any questions!
