This week grade 5 learned a lot about different shapes in math, Like: Triangles; squares; rectangles; pentagons; hexagons; heptagons; octagons; nonagons; decagons; quadrilaterals; trapezoids; parallelograms; and rhombuses. We also learned about how to find the circumference of a circle with the first three numbers of pi. For example, the formula for finding the area of a rectangle is l x w. And the formula for the area of a parallelogram is b x h. b is base, h is height, l is length, and w is width. The formula for finding the circumference of a circle is different in different situations. If you only know the diameter of the circle, the formula would be d x pi. d is diameter. If you only know the radius it would be r x 2 then the answer times 3.14. The Greeks were the people who found out about Pi. The put a circle inside a square. After they did that they put smaller shapes inside the circle and in between the circle and square. The Greeks got as close as they could to a circle. After they got to the closest possible shape to a circle they figured out what we know today as pi. In sports we started a Fitness Active Log. Each week you have to write down what you did each day. Each thing you write down is supposed to be at least 25 minutes. We also started presenting 2 minute presentations. Each person has to pick a topic out of 7 topics, and present them 2 a day. For music we presented reports on artists who sang in different types of music. Zinnia studied the country music. She was assigned to study Taylor Swift and Patsy Cline. Daniel studied Jazz. He researched Louis Armstrong and Michael Buble. In art we just won an award for making the best art out of trash in our age group. The contest was at the University of Princeton. It was on the same day as Communiversity. For the contest you had to make things out of recyclable materials. We made a mural that had three sections. The top section had a drawing of what the world would look like if we didn’t take care of our environment. The bottom section was a drawing of what the Earth would look like if we took care of the environment. The middle section had the words “Save The Environment!” on it. On founders/grandparents day it was raining so we had to do the Maypole inside. It was the first time we did it inside. It was still the same. We danced around the Maypole. The choir sang for the grandparents and special guests. The grandparents watched their grandchildren work in their classrooms We started working on the Exhibition. We have to pick something that we are not okay with, and teach the school community about that problem. We also have to try to figure out a solution to the problem. Julius is working on endangered coral reefs like the Great Barrier Reef. Daniel is working on Overfishing. Alex is working on plastic bags getting into the ocean. Zinnia is working on the problem of the endangered Honeybees. Asher is working on people without proper technology. Nikolas is working on the dangerousness of the deforestation in pipelines in Pennington.
