This is also a noon dismissal day. If your child will be going home with their grandparent/special friend after our celebration, please send us an email so we know who your child will be going home with that afternoon. We are also going to have a Music Together ECP Family Jam on in the commons on, Tuesday, May 16 at 9:45. Hope to see you there! On Science Wednesday, the students used their 5 senses to explore the magic of mushrooms. We discussed the similarities and differences between mushrooms and plants. We learned that mushrooms are fungus. Like plants, mushrooms have stems, but unlike plants they do not have a root system. Mushrooms like dark places to grow and thrive, instead of needing sunlight like plants and flowers. Both mushrooms and plants have seeds, but the seeds of a mushroom are called spores. Mushrooms and plants both provide food and medicine, but beware because there are poisonous varieties of both. That is why we discussed to never eat any wild mushrooms or plants outside, unless parents give permission. "It looks like a jelly fish!" was observed by a student. "It looks like a cupcake," was observed by another. "It smells like perfume. I think they are beautiful." observed a student. "I notice their are sticky on the top." said another. " It feels soft." "It feels wet." "It looks like a circle." "It feels squishy." were all comments made by students during our investigation. The students discovered that pressing the mushroom onto their paper, left behind a color print of it's spores.

****** PJS Founders, Grandparents & Special Friends Day- is Friday, May 5, 2017 10:15-11:45. Please RSVP to Jami Gampper & Dina KunklePlay to LearnThe process of play is an intracal part of the learning and development process. The word play strikes up many thoughts, feelings and memories associated with childhood. Studies have shown the importance of play for language, literacy, mathematical and social development among children. We celebrate and embrace play as a vital component of our curriculum at PJS. Below are two wonderful articles about the importance of play that we thought you might enjoy. ![]()

![]() During our IB unit, We Play to Express Ourselves, Students designed and created their own toys. These toys are displayed in our preschool hallway for all to appreciate. Please take a look at our Toy Gallery whenever you are visiting school. This whimsical collage was created using recycled trash, and other various materials during our afternoon atelier. It will be on display at Communiversity ArtsFest in Downtown Princeton on April 30 th 1-6pm. ![]() We read many books about PLAY. One of our favorites was, Galimoto by Karen Lynn Williams. It was a story about a boy named Kondi from Africa who creates fun toy vehicles in his village. After listening students created a list of similarities and differences between Kondi's village and our PJS community. They noticed that the toys were different but playing was the same. Fun and imagination crosses all cultures and communities. Afternoon Atelier played with chemistry mixing baking soda, vinegar , and food dye when coloring eggs.

They were a welcome surprise for our return from spring break! We were all excited to see the beautiful purple crocus that greeted us in our garden. Our patience paid off as we planted, watered and waited for our flowers to bloom. In class, we are continuing to explore our planting skills as we investigate and learn about seeds and watch them grow. We have planted pea seeds as well as, lima beans. We will give the seeds water, sunlight and time as we wait for them to sprout and grow! Once they begin to sprout, the students will be able to look and identify the different parts of the seed and learn how each part contributes to it's growth. Planting lima bean and pea seeds in CD jewel cases will allow the students to have a better look at the root system and different parts of the seed as they begin to sprout! We also planted seeds into planter boxes. Planting the seeds in a variety of ways will provide many opportunities for the students to observe the developing and growing seeds both below the soil, as well as above. The class will compare and contrast which of our planting methods provided the best environment for the seeds to grow. The students will measure and track their growth utilizing their math and science skills. The introduction to seeds began with a word web about Spring. The class complied a list of words they associated with spring. Creating word webs allows students to:
The class has begun to listen to and discuss books about spring and seeds during morning meeting, as well as during center time. Providing opportunities in whole and small group settings, as we as, individually. During science, the students used their senses to observe pea seeds, and draw their observations in their science journals. Since spring has sprung, it is time to do some spring cleaning. It is probably safe to say, that you may take home any winter items from your child's cubby. If the weather changes, you can always send in winter gear on that day. So please, help us spring clean your child's cubby by taking home items that are no longer needed, and make sure that there is a change of clothing appropriate for the changing weather and changing size of your child. The kids are sprouting just like our flowers and plants! Also, we are asking that you send in a pair of shoes to be worn inside the classroom. With April showers come May flowers and mud. A change of shoes will help us limit the amount of mud that gets trailed into our classroom and school. We appreciate all your help and support!
