Hands-on math activities help our preschoolers get acquainted with counting, measuring, identifying patterns, ordering, comparing, predicting, and one to one correspondence. We utilize natural materials and games to enrich our students math-learning experiences. Loose parts are materials we can touch and explore. We can ask students open ended questions that promote problem solving, probe, and challenge children's mathematical thinking and reasoning. Such questions are not meant to elicit correct answers, but rather to engage students in open ended conversations that promote high-level thinking, such as, What do you notice about these objects? How might we sort these rocks or sticks? Helping us to understand students individual thought processes and how they might arrive at their conclusions.
Mini vases with numbers written on them offered an avenue to play and explore math.
Students shouted, "Lets collect sticks! Lets count sticks! Put the sticks in a vase? Lets find more! Let's put 3 sticks in the #3 vase!

Math games are fun ways to work on one to one correspondence skills to recognize numbers and their amounts, as well as allowing students to practice their number writing and graphing skills.
Cooking is another way for students to be introduced to math skills by measuring quantities and following a recipe which help make math connections to everyday life activities.
Time to enjoy our special math treat! Yum!
Mathematical concepts bridge between all disciplines. Here we have used a science lesson on planting to work on using a ruler to measure the growth of our plants, as well as using the language of math to describe their attributes. Answering questions regarding the plants size, shape and length.
Transplanting our potted plants into our outside garden allows for continued observations and tracking of their growth.

In science lab, we have been investigating the life cycle of insects. Of course, math goes hand in hand with science. We measured the larva and pupa of black beetles. Our students were so curious about measuring other things, we went outside to investigate further with rulers in hand.

As we measured the tree, the students realized, that we needed 12 rulers to measure the height of the tree trunk. Way to be inquirers!

ECP Splash Day is coming up on Thursday, June 1 with a rain date of Friday, June 2. You should have already received an email regarding volunteers for that day, but here are a few more details for your information:
We will be having fun in the water and sun! So please send your child to school in their swimsuit along with a full change of clothes, beach towel, and a hat. Please apply sunscreen to your child at homes, and we will reapply while they are outside having fun! Make sure all items are labeled. If you have any questions please let us know. We are looking to having fun day morning full of water activities!
As the school year comes to a close, please make sure to return any outstanding library books. A list is attached to your child's cubby with any titles that have not been returned. If you have any further questions regarding library books, pease let us know.
