Dear Grade 2/3 Families,
Hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving! We’re all glad to be back! While we are only a few weeks away from winter break, the wheels are not slowing down yet! Here’s a look at our week...
In Grade 2
Math Workshop: We spent last week learning about money. We are counting coins up to $1.00, and some children are counting up to $2.00. We also worked a bit on coins that have equal amounts, like trading in three quarters for seven dimes and a nickel. We practiced a bit of making change as well, which helped us with our big project. The children set up little stores that the other children could shop in. They were so excited to buy and sell their items, and of course it provided practical practice with coins. Ask your child what was sold in his/her store. This week we will continue working with money with more of a focus on making change.
Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop: This week we will focus on choosing good books in reading. Children will also write about their current reading, including summaries and new endings. In writing, we will continue our focus on writing a complete paragraph. We will also include dialogue in our writing.
In Grade 3
Math Workshop: we:
In Readers’ Workshop, We started a new Read Aloud book titled: The Prince of the Pond. It’s a Kindle book so readers may read along with me on the Smartboard. It took some time to really get into the book-- Chapter 3, we decided, was really a turning point. We are already on Chapter 5 and it’s SO hard to stop! Ask your reader about the Pin, the character in the book, and how his character is developing. Also, ask about any other characters in the book.
In Writers’ Workshop, new spelling words will consistently be given each week on Mondays and dictations will be consistently given on Fridays. So far, they’re going great! It is crucial that parents help learners with their spelling so they are successful on dictations. You can do this by giving mini-dictations with the words that are in the spelling journal which live in your learner’s backpack! Thank you for your support!
In our 2/3 learning community
IB Unit Inquiry: We started our new unit about the Earth’s constantly changing surface. Learners did a See, Think, Wonder with an image posted outside of the grade 2/ 3 classroom and watched a video about rocks and rock formation. We will be taking a field trip to the New Jersey State Museum on Thursday, Dec. 8th (note the change of date!) and we are super excited for the 3 programs we will partake in:

Math Workshop: we:
- Got assessed on our understanding of the distributive property and how to use it as a strategy for solving multiplication combinations we aren’t yet fluent in. Ask your child what it means fluency means with multiplication facts.
- We learned some fact fluency practice techniques (keep an eye out for parent homework around this!)
