Dear Grade 2/3 Families,
We cannot imagine a more successful Market Day! Thank you to all of you who helped support the children as they learned about business. This will definitely be something they remember, and they learned so much more than if we just talked about it in class.
Looking ahead, we are excited about Grandparents’ Day. If you haven’t already done so, please RSVP by sending an email with the number of guests we can expect on Friday. We are hoping this will be a special day for our students and their grandparents or special friends.
Keep your eyes open for a sign-up for student led conferences. You should receive the sign-up this week.
In Grade 2
Math Workshop: This week we will work with numbers to 1,000. Children will make numbers with blocks, write them in standard and expanded form, and work on changing them by hundreds and tens.
Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop: We will continue our focus on grammar this week. As we continue to find nouns and verbs, we will also look more closely at adjectives. We will find them in our reading, and we will use powerful verbs in our writing.
In Grade 3
Math Workshop: Third graders signed up for a strategy group they felt like they needed a refresher in. Most were interested in joining a strategy group focusing on solving Story Problems, and writing their own Story Problems that matched different multiplication and division scenarios. Mathematicians were also very excited to learn a strategy for solivng multi-digit multiplication called Area Model. Ask your child to show you how they would approach a 3 digit by 2 digit multiplication problem! :)
In Readers’ Workshop, we celebrated poetry with our Poetry Jam in school. Poets read poetry that they enjoyed from a book, or that they had authored themselves! We also celebrated Poem in your Pocket day where poets walked around and exchanged poems they carried with them throghout the day. Coming up, we will be talking about how to grow our reading stamina!
In Writers’ Workshop: we put together our planned out anthologies. They are hanging on the clothesline in the classroom- check them out when you get a chance! We will continue working independently through the Writing Process working on unfinished pieces of any genre.
In our 2/3 learning community
IB Unit Inquiry: We will spend this week assessing the learning that took place during our marketplace unit. We will also reflect on what went well and poorly on Market Day. This is a good chance to think about what we would do differently in the future. It is also a good opportunity for students to feel proud about how much they learned through the process of making their business run. This week we will begin our 6th and final unit on how sound helps us communicate. This unit will kickstart with this Wednesday’s field trip to the Princeton University Orchestra.
