Dear Grade 2/3 Families,
Thank you to those of you who have signed up for your child’s student led conference on May 18 or 19. If you haven’t done so, please sign up using the SignUp Genius that was sent out last week.
We hope our grandparents and special friends had a good time here at PJS on Friday. They were able to work together with the children on a project and enjoy watching the children dance the Maypole dance. Please take a moment to look at the pictures below.
Don’t forget to join us for our parent book club meeting this Tuesday at 3:00 in our classroom. This will be a good way to wrap up our marketplaces unit. We are looking forward to sharing and hearing your ideas about teaching our children about finances.
In Grade 2
Math Workshop: This week we will continue our work with numbers to 1,000. Children will make numbers with blocks, write them in standard and expanded form, and work on changing them by hundreds and tens. We will also order and compare larger numbers.
Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop: Now that the children have a better understanding of what adjectives are, we will focus on using better adjectives in our writing. We will draw pictures and write descriptions of them to share with others. We will find the adjectives in our writing and our friends’ writing as well. Then we will help each other use even more interesting adjectives to make our writing even better.
In Grade 3
Math Workshop: While we continue to do a thorough review of all the third grade math concepts we learned throughout the year, we’ve been keeping it FRESH with some 3 Act Math and some mini-lessons emphasizing the importance of generating questions/wonders during problem solving AND asking for the right information in order to problem solve. Ask your learner about the Krispy Kreme donut problem we worked on. Then ask them about the 4 Dunkin Donut boxes that came to school the following day! PLEASE BE SURE YOU AND YOUR LEARNER CONTINUE PRACTICING MULTIPLICATION FACT FLUENCY.
In Readers’ Workshop, we’ve been working on our STAMINA. We decided what was needed in order to “push through” and have the “energy” or the “will” to read good fitting books at length for a sustained period of time. Ask your reader what they do in order to read with STAMINA. Up next we will shine a spotlight on how to engage in good Reading Talk!
In Writers’ Workshop: we will be polishing up some 2-3 unfinished pieces and then making selections for our portfolios. Stay tuned for student-led converences!
In our 2/3 learning community
IB Unit Inquiry: We were so excited to join Grades 4 and 5 at the Bravo concert performed by the Princeton Symphony Orchestra last week. This was a great way to get us thinking about our new unit. For the remainder of the school year, we will be focused on how people use sound to express themselves. This week we will take an inventory of what the children already know about sound, and then we help guide the children as they choose which aspects of sound they would like to study.
