Good afternoon!
We hope you are enjoying this extended, albeit very chilly weekend! Please note that school will be closed this Monday in observance of Presidents' Day. Additionally, school will dismiss at noon this Thursday and Friday in order for Parent Teacher Conferences to get underway. Due to this, we will be having a Pizza Wednesday this week.
During math last week, students continued to develop their knowledge in multiple ways, including regrouping addition, multiplication, division, and some fractions. To build on their knowledge, students continue to use math manipulatives to visualize their math. Through partner work and class discussions, they are building their number sense, including familiarity with numbers and number relationships, especially between multiplication and division, and subtraction and addition.

After presenting last Friday, we took time this week to have students reflect on their writing and presenting. This provided students with time to ponder their own growth and progress through the unit, including reflecting upon their interviewing, writing, and presenting skills.
After completing their reflections and rubric analysis, students began their newest unit, "Earth's surface is constantly reshaping itself and changing the landscape."
During this unit, students will be studying natural causes to changes on Earth, including plate tectonics, volcanic activity, and erosion. To launch this unit, we asked students, "Does the Earth beneath our feet move?" During reading and writing time, students were able to explore and share their ideas with their classmates. In the images below, students are reading about the composition of our Earth, including the tectonic plates moving beneath us.
In the coming week, students will consider types of erosion, causes of earthquakes, and how are planet has looked through the eons, including the supercontinent Pangaea. They will also begin to research the question, "How does Earth's changing surface impact its inhabitants?"
We also had time for a wonderful Valentine's Day party and a visit from the local musicians, Simple Gift. The students had a great time at both events. Thank you to everyone who made the events possible!
