Good afternoon!
We hope you are all enjoying this sunny, temperate day! We are looking forward to getting back to school tomorrow and enjoying a full week of learning. Please note that the Word Study quiz will be tomorrow morning due to the snow cancellation on Friday.
Though last week was a bit short, our students had many wonderful learning experiences, including a visit to the Adventure Aquarium and performance of The Wizard of Oz. Thank you to everyone who made these events possible, especially to the chaperones who accompanied us on our trip!
The trip to the aquarium is the beginning of our next transdisciplinary unit focused on the central idea that, "Water is essential to life, but many people have limited access to it." Our students were able to explore types of aquatic habitats, including coral reefs, as well as begin to wonder about how our actions are impact water and its availability around the world.

In reading and writing this week, students continued to develop their nonfiction reading strategies, research their IB topics, practice handwriting, and write their All About books. Students will continue to develop their books throughout this week! Topics for the All About books include earthquakes, glaciers, volcanoes, weather, and rivers. Please inquire with your child which topic they are writing about and how it helps to reshape Earth's surface.
In mathematics, students continue to develop their understanding of number, pattern, and time. One activity that stood out for students this week was to create posters for younger learners on their favorite strategies for solving addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. This activity helped students reflect on their own process and consider how they would share this information with an emerging learner. Students are also enjoying practicing time using analog clocks. In the coming week, students will be asked to think about elapsed time. Please include your child in discussions about time and schedules, this will help balance their growing knowledge. For example, if they have soccer at 5 p.m. and it lasts for 1 hour and 30 minutes, what time will it be when soccer is over?
Have a wonderful Sunday afternoon and please contact us with any questions!
Kindly,
Britt and Anne
