Dear Families,
This year seems to be flying by as we are only two weeks away from our Thanksgiving holiday. "Gobble...Gobble!"
Many members of the OK Corral kicked off the week by performing in the Open Mic Assembly on Monday. The children showed off their talents by singing, dancing, and playing their musical instruments. It was a joy to witness so much talent in our community!

In Second Grade Reading this week, the students continued working on building their reading strategies and skills, as they focused on reading across the words, reading sight words in a "snap", self-awareness that known words can helps figure out "tricky words". All of these strategies assist the children in developing their fluency skills. This includes linking the words learned in our work in Word Study as they are known words that can easily be applied the patterns in reading. In Third Grade, the students continue building their reading skills through the reading of historical fiction text. The students are responding to their reading by asking questions about the authenticity of the details such as "Did this really happen?", "What is the evidence that tells me so?"
"I know the words, 'and, the, & come' so I can read those quickly to get to the next word. It also helps me understand what I am reading!"
"I figured out that I can use words I know to help me figure out the tricky words! I like to chunk them out!"

In Second Grade Writing the students continue to study author's and their craft to learn that as writers, they can create beautiful stories by showing actions, feelings, and thinking. The students are adding wonderful onomatopoeia (sound words) such as "boom", "chirp", " and "arrgghh" to make their good writing even better! They are also adding "sparkle words" (adjectives) to assist in making a movie in their reader's mind. In Third Grade, students continue to develop their own plot lines of historical musicians as they add personal storylines about the influential musicians that they are studying.
"WOW! The sound words are so cool! I used the word 'chirp' to show the reader that there is a bird chirping in the sky."
"Like Mo Willems, I used "agrrrrrhhhhh" in my writing!"
"I used 'speech bubbles' like Kevin Henkes."
"You know what? My reading is helping me to write!"

In Grade Two math students focused on the comprehension of number sense by focusing on addition strategies. Students used games and manipulatives such as counters, unified cubes and number lines to assist in gaining knowledge of what addition looks like. Third Grade began exploring multiplication, its relationship with division, and how it can be used in everyday life. The students were able to apply their knowledge multiplication as they authored multiplication math problems for one another to solve.
Sound Project!
The OK Corral explored sound by making Oobleck, a non-Newtonian fluid that acts like a liquid when being poured but also a solid when pressing on it. We experimented with the Oobleck by placing it over speakers to observe what sound waves look like. The children were able to witness a few waves but not enough to make the Oobleck "dance" as only a subwoofer can.
I love Oobleck! It feels squishy and gooey. We didn't see a lot of sound but we saw a little. We need a subwoofer".
"The Oobleck wasn't a solid or a liquid...it feels like a solid when you touch it but moves like a liquid. We need a subwoofer to make it dance, though."
"By the way, did you share the recipe with my mom?"
The following is the Oobleck Recipe that your children asked us to share with you.
I cup water
1 1/2 - 2 cups corn startch
a few drops of food coloring of your choice
