Dear Families,
We hope you are enjoying a lovely Sunday as we get ready for the Thanksgiving holiday in less than two weeks.
The OK Corral cordially invites you to a performance of Sound on Monday, November 17, at 9:00am. The children have diligently been exploring sound through creative expression by the use creative movement, voice play, and instruments. We invite you sit back, relax, and enjoy the innovative means in which sound has been created by the children.
The children enjoyed a special Storytelling Performance sponsored by the wonderful PJSPA on Thursday, November 13. Donald Davis shared tales from his boyhood days in the Southern Appalachian mountains. The children (and adults!) were mesmerized as shared lively accounts ranging from hiding his vegetables in the dining room table legs to giving his younger brother a haircut. We were grateful for his lesson on writing as well as he used his five fingers to show that stories have people, places, purpose, problem, and progress.

In Second Grade Reading this week, the students continued working on building their reading strategies and skills, as they focused on asking themselves three important questions while reading. 1) Does it sound right? 2) Does it look right? and 3) Does it make sense? These questions assist the children in developing their fluency skills and well as their comprehension skills. In Third Grade, the students continue building their reading skills through the reading of historical fiction text. The students are busily responding to the text by posing questions and confirming the authenticity of their reading. Many are asking the question, "What is the evidence that tells me this is true?"
In Second Grade Writing the students continue to study author's and their craft to learn that as writers, they can create beautiful stories by showing actions, feelings, and thinking. They are becoming experts at using onomatopoeia in speech bubbles, in text and in illustrations. They are also immersed in using the "sparkle words" as they are beginning to understand that sparkle words are more than "happy" and "sad" but also "joyful" and "gloomy". In Third Grade, students continue to develop their own plot lines of historical musicians as they add personal storylines about the influential musicians that they are studying. They are adding descriptive details to make their good writing even better!
In Second Grade Math, students focused on solving addition word problems. Through critically thinking out the problem, namely thinking, understanding what information given, what numbers are given, and what needs to be solved. Third Grade continue to explore multiplication, its relationship with division, and how it can be used in everyday life. The students were able to apply their knowledge multiplication as they authored multiplication math problems for one another to solve.
We look forward to seeing you at the Thanksgiving Assembly on Friday!
Until then, have a wonderful week!
