This week in readers workshop students began to think about who they are as fiction readers, we worked from mentor text to examine the elements of a good story. Students listened, read, thought and discussed what elements they noticed in each story we read. Their thinking was recorded and they reflected on it later in the week. It was a great week of student led thinking as we enjoyed our multi cultural mentor text during read aloud and independent reading of just right books!
Writers Workshop | |
In writers workshop we have been fortunate enough to work with renowned author Georgia Heard! We began to think about things that were close to our heart. We created lists and then made heart maps from all the ideas of stories we had gathered. As the week went on we reflected on our heart maps, shared our stories and began to write MORE stories inspired by classmates! The writing has been so personal, we have been exploring new and different ways to share stories from our hearts.
InquiryIn Inquiry students have been making connections across the content areas though the vehicle of the discovery of cave paintings in Lascaux, France. Students have seen a video, slide show and read a book based on these paintings and made connections between storytelling and images. We will continue storytelling in different media as the unit continues, here is some student thinking recorded after seeing the video, slideshow and reading the book "Discovering Lascaux". |
Math Workshop
We have been working on assessing student progress and working towards growing our math skills in math workshop. We worked with math centers, estimation stations, arrays and will continue to assess the growth of our learners this coming week. We have been weaving the history and origins of math into math workshop and will continue to do so throughout the unit.
